This movie was very interesting on several levels. Its based on a true story about a journalist Steve Lopez that wrote for the L.A Times. Lopez discovers a man named Nathaniel Anthony Ayers , a former classical music prodigy, playing his violin on the streets of L.A. As Lopez endeavors to help the homeless man find his way back, a unique friendship is formed, one that transforms both their lives. This movie is about the musician but also about the homeless and the struggles they face being on the street. This movie sparked musical instrument donation drives all over the country. The question remains Is there actually a link between artistic creativity and mental illness? Most artists are not mentally ill, and most mentally ill people are not artists. However, several studies have suggested that artists are more likely than others to suffer from a class of mental illnesses called mood disorders. This is a debate that people are always trying to find answers to. The raw creativity and talent, where does this come from? Why are some people more gifted than others?
In any case, this movie is really worth seeing as it is a touching story between two people that need a friend are brought together though music. Music is a powerful thing, but powerful in good and sometimes negative way too.
