“Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend” Featuring One Kitty Gone

On April 24th, venture back into the 1950’s with a classic event featuring the live music of local band One Kitty Gone, in “Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend”. This home grown band is inspired by the 40’s and 50’s, studio era Hollywood and pinup girl glamour. The band also features 7 different musical instruments used in the performance.

In addition you will get the chance to sit down and experience the movie “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” staring Marilyn Monroe, which really captures the theme of the show. This will sure to be an evening to travel back to 50’s with music, film and traditional cocktail gatherings. In attendance will be the local Artists of AZCulture.

It appears as though the New Orleans Jazz Fest won’t be Simon & Garfunkel’s “only” U.S. appearance of 2010: Both Minnesota’s Star Tribune and North Dakota’s Grand Forks Herald report that the duo will perform at Fargo’s Fargodome on May 7th and the Twin Cities’ Xcel Energy Centre on May 8th in what appears to be the first dates of a possible U.S. tour.

The sporadically updated Simon & Garfunkel official Website has not yet confirmed the two new dates, but Ticketmaster postings reveal that tickets for the shows go on sale March 13th, so the shows appear to be legit. (That is unless it’s that other Paul Simon who’s been making the rounds.) According to the Winnpeg Free Press, Simon & Garfunkel will also play their first ever show in that Canadian city on May 5th. Previously, the pair performed at the Rock Hall 25th Anniversary concerts at Madison Square Garden.

Whenever rock & roll appears in advertisements, some fans protest. A new car commercial featuring archival footage of John Lennon is currently causing a bit of an uproar in the U.K., and some Beatles fans are questioning why Yoko Ono permitted French automaker Citroen to use footage of Lennon discussing the creative process. The backlash has prompted Sean Lennon to respond via Twitter, where he defended his mother’s attempt to keep his famous father in the “public consciousness.”

“Look, TV ad was not for money. It’s just hard to find new ways to keep dad in the new world. Not many things as effective as TV,” Sean tweeted. “Having just seen ad I realize why people are mad. But intention was not financial, was simply wanting to keep him out there in the world… No new LPs, so TV ad is exposure to young.”

This isn’t the first time the posthumous use of John Lennon in a commercial has sparked controversy: As Rolling Stone reported in December 2008, a digital version of Lennon was used in a commercial for One Laptop Per Child.

In the commercial for Citroen’s “anti-retro” DS3 model, Lennon says in the interview footage, “Once a thing’s been done, it’s been done. So while this nostalgia, I mean for the ’60s and ’70s, looking backwards for inspiration, copying the past, how is that rock n’ roll? Do something of your own, start something new. Live your life now.”

Jeff Buckley’s music may be joining the Who and Green Day on Broadway thanks to a new show that fuses his songs with William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The Last Goodbye was first conceived three years ago by Michael Kimmel, a New York director and theater professor who started up the project when he noticed how uncannily well Buckley’s lyrics accented the Bard’s language. With approval from Buckley’s estate, Kimmel created a musical using “New Year’s Prayer,” “So Real” and “Eternal Life” and other songs from the singer-songwriter’s catalog to further the classic play’s tale of ill-fated love.

“Jeff’s music takes this idea of young emotion and passion to an entirely different level that we haven’t seen with the play before,” Kimmel explains. “What I love about the show is that it’s this great merging of a really strong writer and an amazing musician.” After well-received concert readings in New York last spring, Kimmel and his creative team are finalizing plans for a regional staging later this year. Interest from commercial producers has sparked hope for a Broadway transfer during the 2010-2011 season, but Kimmel isn’t planning too far ahead: “All the attention the piece has gotten has been really exciting, but for us, it’s about getting it right.”

During the past seven years, all of us involved with the Circle K Tempe Music Festival have greatly appreciated the tremendous outpouring of support from our fans, our sponsors and the City of Tempe as we have continued to grow and improve the event year after year.

For 2010, we have had to make the tough decision to postpone our efforts. The single and primary factor in our decision is that, due to various artists’ recording and touring schedules, we now believe that timing will not allow for us to assemble a line-up of top-tiered talent that everyone has come to expect from the festival.

Despite the 2010 postponement, we intend to move toward continuing the Circle K Tempe Music Festival in 2011. Stay tuned for details.
